9/8/2023 0 Comments Mandolin tuner spacing![]() It seemed like more with it on the instrument. ![]() One of the "e" strings has about 1/2 turn before it starts to adjust, and one of the "a" strings has about 3/4 turns before it starts to adjust the string. Oh and the graphite did make it easier to tune, but the problem is definitely on the tuner itself. Both sets of tuners, measurements, the whole deal. so I'll do that tomorrow, with pics of everything. Anyway Mike Edgerton asked me to post pics of the original tuners on the other thread where I asked about a source for 25mm tuners. I contacted them about a custom job and they quoted me 165$. They are "standard" (23mm) and the spacing on my mandolin is 25mm. ![]() Well I ordered and received a set of tuners from Rubner and they are beautiful. If strings are sharp slacken off till they go flat and then tune up. make sure you always tune up, never down. Only (3) is terminal, and almost unheard of on new machines.Īnd finally. ![]() Generally the only issues you get with the machines themselves are:ģ) The gears slip a cog resulting in the pitch suddenly dropping. See for one fix.ģ) Same as (1) but your strap chord is binding the strings.Ĥ) Old worn out strings that don't want to go and stay in pitch anymore. Ultimately you're looking at maybe re-shaping the nut slots and getting the instrument correctly set up.Ģ) Insufficiently well secured strings to the tuner posts - less common and when it occurs you normally get nearly up to pitch and then the string starts sliding on the post and the pitch starts dropping even while you're tuning up. This is a setup issue, as a DIY first fix, try some pencil lead (graphite) in the slots that bind. Eventually you get enough tension to make the string move in the nut and you hear a "ping" and the string jumps up much sharper than it was before. To answer your question - not hard at all to swap tuners over - however I would strongly suspect one of several other issues:ġ) Binding in the nut - this is the most common cause - you crank the strings up but they don't slide freely in the nut so the pitch doesn't change. ![]()
